California officers honor K-9 killed in the line of duty

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach police say friendly fire killed a police dog that died fighting a man who charged officers with a knife.

A 4-year-old Belgian Malinois called Credo died after an officer opened fire Tuesday.

The man also died. His name hasn't been released.

Police say he was wanted in connection with a December 2014 shooting that wounded several people.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force spotted the man Tuesday but he ran to a friend's apartment.

Police surrounded the building and ordered him out. They say once outside, the man refused to surrender and began advancing on officers, who fired rubber bullets and unleashed Credo.

Police say as Credo fought with the man, he pulled a knife and kept advancing. An officer then opened fire, striking both.
