Abalone season started this year amid warnings about widespread destruction of the kelp forest off the North Coast, the result, in part, of an explosion of voracious purple urchins that threatened to starve out their own species, as well as abalone and other marine creatures.

Ab divers: Tell us what it looks like under those coastal waves.

Is the bull kelp truly gone? Are the abalone shrunken? Are there purples everywhere?
