Police say a Santa Rosa man who drove into the side of a Rohnert Park apartment building Wednesday was driving under the influence.

According to a Rohnert Park Police news release, Jerry Copus, 30, drove through a stop sign at the corner of Adrian Drive and Southwest Boulevard about 3:30 p.m. before crashing into the side of the Brewster Ames apartment building at 7380 Adrian Drive.

An Rohnert Park officer arrived and saw Copus attempting to flee the scene.

Police said Copus was driving at an unsafe speed, and after running the stop sign had to swerve to avoid stopped cars, losing control of his Acura and careening into the building. The crash smashed an electrical panel and the main power lines to two nearby buildings, causing an outage.

Residents of the apartment Copus crashed into were not home at the time. Their dog inside was not injured.

Police estimated the collision caused $50,000 damage.
