A 7-acre brush fire south of Cloverdale Tuesday briefly closed both lanes of Highway 101 as flames spread to the edge of the freeway and jumped to a median strip.

The blaze broke out about 2:25 p.m. on the west side of the freeway near Asti, Cal Fire spokesman Russell West said.

Early reports said it spread into the trees and sent smoke over the highway, hampering visibility. The freeway was shut down for 45 minutes while fire crews from Cloverdale, Healdsburg, Geyserville and Cal Fire put it out.

The cause was under investigation.
