MODESTO - An off-duty corrections officer has shot and injured a man who was waving a knife in a Northern California Costco.

The Modesto Bee reports (http://bit.ly/2ankVal) that Costco employee Seth Watson says the man appeared to be intoxicated and was jabbing a knife near people on Thursday afternoon. He says the man didn't say anything or threaten anyway.

Watson says the California Department of Corrections officer confronted the man and told him several times to drop the knife, but he didn't comply. According to Watson, the pair went outside, where the officer shot the man.

Modesto police Sgt. Chris Adams says the 61-year-old man is in critical but stable condition.

About 300 people were in Costco during the incident. No one else was hurt.
