A 22-year-old Santa Rosa man was shot in a gang attack and three suspects were arrested late Sunday, police reported.

The shooting in the “Indian Villages” area of northwest Santa Rosa, in the 2600 block of Mohawk Court, was reported just after 9 p.m. by a caller.

Police arrived within two minutes and aided the victim, who was struck in the upper torso and arms. He was taken to the hospital for surgery for injuries described as not life-threatening.

A police photo showed four bullet holes in the windshield of the car in which the victim was a passenger.

Witnesses reported numerous gunshots and subjects quickly leaving the area in a sedan.

Less than 20 minutes after the shooting, police located several known gang participants walking toward the suspect car in the area of Willrush Street and Umland Drive more than a mile away, according to Sgt. Tommy Isachsen. The officers detained the trio and searched the vehicle, finding a handgun under the seat and spent casings consistent with being recently fired.

Taken into custody on charges of attempted murder, weapons and gang violations were Gustavo Alex Castillo, 23, Angel Reyes, 18, and a 17-year-old boy, all of Santa Rosa.

Castillo was on parole for gang-related offenses. The 17-year-old was also on probation for gang offenses.

The Gang Crimes Team said the shooting appeared to be targeted and not random.

Isachsen said there have been three separate incidents over the past three days of guns being seized from gang members.
