Sonoma County law enforcement officers Monday were investigating two men’s deaths: one of a man found in a vacant Windsor home frequented by the homeless, and the second an apparent drug overdose involving a 30-year-old in Petaluma who police said was newly homeless.

Windsor deputies responded to the Hembree Lane property Monday morning after the body was found by a homeless woman, Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Crum said. The body was decomposed but there was no obvious sign of violence.

The abandoned home, in the 6800 block, is one of three the city is planning to demolish to create an open space and walkway. The row of homes has had issues with squatters and the theft of wiring and other items, Crum said.

The man was carrying identification but his name still was being confirmed and family then will be notified, Crum said. An autopsy was scheduled.

In Petaluma, a woman called for help about 8:20 a.m., saying her boyfriend wasn’t breathing and may have suffered a drug overdose, Petaluma police Sgt. Ed Crosby said.

Firefighters arrived to find the man on the ground on commercial property near Lindberg Lane and Payran Street.

They determined he was dead and called police. The man was identified later Monday as Jonathan Christopher Moore.

The woman told officers she believed the man had taken fentanyl.

The synthetic opioid pain medication is known to be up to ?100 times stronger than morphine, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The woman told officers her boyfriend had overdosed two days ago while in Marin County but had been revived by paramedics. Officers Monday were contacting Marin County agencies, trying to confirm that report, Crosby said.

Police officers knew the couple from previous contacts. Crosby described them as newly homeless, saying they’d been camping along the edge of the property, hidden from view by a fence and landscaping.

Petaluma officers don’t suspect violence or foul play in the man’s death. An autopsy was scheduled.

Crosby asked anyone with information to contact Detective Nick McGowan at 707-778-4456.
