SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco police said they are investigating a possible hate crime after a group of assailants pepper-sprayed two men and yelled homophobic slurs.

Police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said the men were attacked outside a restaurant in the city's Western Addition Saturday night.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/2da2SY4) the men were visiting from New York for Sunday's Folsom Street Fair, a popular street festival that celebrates the city's fetishist subculture.

Neil Frias told the newspaper that as he and his friend Jeff White were leaving a McDonald's restaurant, five men pulled up in a blue minivan accusing them of "destroying family values" before getting out of the vehicle and blasting them with pepper spray.

Police said they were searching for surveillance video that may have captured the attack.
