Clearlake police arrested an 18-year-old man with a loaded handgun following a car crash, foot chase and tussle, as the handcuffed suspect allegedly tried to head-butt an officer, allowing another man to escape, police reported Tuesday.

Clearlake resident Nathan McCloud was taken to the Lake County Jail following his arrest late Friday night.

He was suspected of several crimes including carrying a loaded, concealed gun in a public place, being armed during a felony crime and obstructing an officer by force.

Police said McCloud and several other people ran away from a vehicle that crashed on Burns Valley Road just before 10:30 p.m. Friday. The first officer to arrive spotted McCloud, who ran from the officer into a nearby apartment complex, police said. The officer reported the suspect repeatedly reached into his right pants pocket as he ran.

After a short dash, the officer caught McCloud and knocked him to the ground, where they struggled briefly before the suspect was handcuffed, according to police.

A second man began yelling and swearing at the officer while reaching repeatedly for his waistline, police said. The officer, who said he believed the man could have a gun, pulled his Taser, awaiting other officers. McCloud then attempted to head-butt the officer, and the second man ran away, police said.

McCloud was carrying a .380-caliber pistol in his right front pocket, police said.

His bail was set at $30,000. Police asked anyone with information to contact Officer Kelleher at 707-994-8251 extension 516.
