Firefighters have fully contained the wildfire that broke out Sunday in The Geysers area of northeastern Sonoma County.

The Sawmill fire grew to 1,547 acres after starting along Geysers Road about 10:43 a.m. Sunday. The flames moved through heavy brush, including dry grass and oak woodland, and sent up a massive cloud of dark smoke over a large swath of the county. Residents were ordered to evacuate from three dozen homes on Geysers Road, but no structures were burned. Two minor injuries were reported.

The peak response to the blaze included more than 470 firefighters and personnel, eight air tankers, six helicopters and 10 bulldozers.

The cause remains under investigation. The fire zone overlapped an area burned by the McCabe fire, which burned 3,500 acres in November 2013.
