A man was stabbed Monday night inside an apartment building in Santa Rosa’s historic Cherry Street neighborhood, triggering a helicopter search over central Santa Rosa, police said.

The man was rushed to an area hospital. The extent of his injuries weren’t immediately available.

The stabbing was reported at 6:37 p.m. at an apartment building in the 500 block of Humboldt Street. Sgt. Steve Pehlke said the man was stabbed inside one of the apartments and came outside the building seeking help.

Yellow tape cordoned off the front of the apartment and a stretch of sidewalk outside several houses on the block.

The Sonoma County sheriff’s helicopter, which one official said was in the air on an unrelated matter, joined the search for a suspect, circling low over central Santa Rosa. No arrests were immediately reported.
