A man found injured along Highway 101 north of Ukiah early Wednesday morning had been beaten with a baseball bat by assailants who also robbed him of a pound of marijuana, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office received a call shortly after 7 a.m. of a loud commotion, possibly a fight, near the intersection of Highway 101 and Reeves Canyon Road, said Lt. Shannon Barney.

When they arrived, deputies were told that multiple people had arrived at the location, possibly in connection with a marijuana sale, he said.

At least two people assaulted the victim, Zachariah Barber, 29, a Ukiah transient, Barney said. Barber was taken to Ukiah Valley Medical Center, treated and released, he said.

The suspects have not yet been identified but may have been driving a green Suburban or Jeep type vehicle, Barney said.

The case remains under investigation, he said.
