Girls Sports Expo set for Jan. 29 at Santa Rosa Junior College

Sonoma County girls interested in fencing, basketball, taekwondo or a wide selection of other sports are invited to attend the 20th annual Girls Sports Expo at Santa Rosa Junior College on Jan. 29.

Hundreds of girls in grades three to six typically attend the free event designed to expose them to athletics in a noncompetitive environment.

A study indicated that girls have only a 10 percent chance of being physically active adults unless they participate in sports or physical activity by age 10.

The Sports Expo allows attendees to choose four sports from about a dozen offerings and participate in mini-seminars, exposing them to the sports’ basics.

Girls Sports Expo is sponsored by Girl Scouts of Northern California, Women’s Sports Foundation and Santa Rosa Junior College. It runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine.

Check-in is inside Haehl Pavilion, and those not preregistered must have a completed registration form signed by a parent or legal guardian or be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children interested in swimming or fencing can sign up at registration, space permitting.

Participants should bring a snack and a backpack with identification inside, and come dressed in clothing and shoes for physical activity. No sandals or heels are permitted.

Adult volunteers also are needed. Contact Kelly Garshman at Kgarshman@aol.com.
