Santa Rosa buying vacant liquor store

The commercial property is being eyed for possible future city projects, including creek access or bridge widening.|

Santa Rosa is spending $340,000 to buy a former liquor store perched above a local creek at one of the city’s busiest intersections.

The City Council on Tuesday approved the purchase of the vacant GD Liquor and Food building at the intersection of Farmer’s Lane and Fourth Street.

The building at 2810 Fourth St. is adjacent to the Farmer’s Lane bridge over Santa Rosa Creek, and sits on a large rock outcropping that was once the site of a pumping plant for the city’s water system. Demolishing the building, a decision that hasn’t yet been made, could allow for future widening of the four-lane bridge.

It could also be removed to provide greater public access to Santa Rosa Creek, city officials said.

City staff members have also noted that the building, which has been vacant for more than a year, has been frequently attracting vagrants.
