Bay Area restaurant fined for mislabeling fish
MORGAN HILL - A popular San Francisco Bay Area restaurant has been fined for mislabeling fish on its menu.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/2llOK3J) that according to a civil judgment announced Wednesday, Odeum in Morgan Hill must pay $120,000 and offer gift cards to any customer who ordered sole between 2014 and 2016 because those customers received tilapia.
The Santa Clara County district attorney's office found that Odeum was serving farmed tilapia and calling it wild-caught sole for a period of over a year.
Conservation group Oceana says fish fraud is a common practice and estimates that 1 in 5 seafood samples worldwide is mislabeled.
Santa Clara County officials say they hope steep fines keep menus honest.
A spokesperson for Odeum declined to comment.
