Tuberculosis case reported at Bay Areahigh school

FAIRFIELD - A principal in the San Francisco Bay Area says a case of active pulmonary tuberculosis has been reported at his high school.

Eric Tretten, the principal of Fairfield's Armijo High School, said Thursday the health department will work with school officials to mitigate the risk to the school's staff and its 2,391 students.

Tuberculosis is a rare respiratory disease that attacks the tissue of the host and can be fatal if left untreated. It is spread through the air.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/2lSNPIO) that Tretten did not say whether a student of staff member contracted the disease.

A joint letter from Tretten and Solano County Public Health Department's Michael Stacey says school officials will notify parents within the week if their child needs to be tested for exposure to the disease.
