Neighbors called for help Monday afternoon when smoke started coming from a Gualala mobile home, launching a firefighting attack that saved about half the residence, according to fire officials.

South Coast Fire volunteers, dispatched at 3:19 p.m., arrived in an engine within seven minutes to the Old State Highway mobile home park, finding smoke and flames coming from the residence. Redwood Coast and North Coast volunteers, as well as Cal Fire, also responded.

The volunteers started the initial fire attack and saved the home from burning completely, said Cal Fire Engineer Mark Potts, who was at the call.

“Mobile homes usually have a tendency to be down on the ground in about 10 minutes. They burn very, very quickly,” said Potts. “They (the volunteers) saved well over 50 percent of the mobile home. It was a really good save.”

No one was home when the fire started. The fire was under control at 4:10 p.m. and completely extinguished by 5:25 p.m., according to Cal Fire dispatch records.

Information about the cause of the fire wasn’t available Tuesday morning.
