A Covelo man who allegedly fired a shotgun at a tribal police officer was in custody Tuesday night, according to a Mendocino County sheriff’s emergency dispatcher.

Jeffery Joaquin, 22, apparently was apprehended after he fled the scene at the Round Valley Indian Reservation in Covelo.

Two tribal police officers were dispatched to the community at 10 a.m. for reports of an armed subject in the 22500 block of Refuse Road.

After they arrived, Joaquin allegedly fired a round of birdshot at one of the officers, striking him in the face with a pellet. The officer returned fire as Joaquin took cover. He then fled on foot.
