A man killed Friday in a fiery head-on crash in Ukiah was burned beyond recognition and hasn’t yet been identified, according to a Mendocino County sheriff’s official.

The driver was believed to be a Ukiah resident, and dental records or DNA will be used to officially identify him, sheriff’s Capt. Greg Van Patten said on Tuesday.

On Friday morning he was speeding north on North State Street in a Toyota Camry when he crossed into the opposite lane and smashed into an oncoming Ford Explorer, according to the CHP. The car hit a fence, power pole and a parked Jeep and the Camry and Jeep burst into flames.

Four people in the Explorer were injured.
