Mountain lion DNA found inside Bay Area home where dog was snatched

PESCADERO - California wildlife officials say a trace of mountain lion DNA was found inside a Northern California home, confirming reports that a feline went into a bedroom where a woman and her child were sleeping and snatched their dog.

A Pescadero homeowner last week called 911 to report seeing an animal enter the room, take the 15-pound Portuguese Podengo sleeping at the foot of her bed and leave.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says a wildlife officer discovered a small drop of blood on the door, which was predominantly domestic dog, with trace amounts of mountain lion DNA.

The department says the property owners are eligible for a depredation permit but that they opted not to receive it.

It stressed that the lion's behavior is extremely rare and that most mountain lions are elusive in nature and rarely seen.
