Landslides again close Highway 101 north of Leggett

Highway 101 in northern Mendocino County has again been closed by landslides, one day after reopening, Caltrans reported.

The highway north of Leggett initially was closed April 16 after some 6,000 cubic yards of soil slid onto the road from the adjacent hillside. The mountain continued to slip through the week, dumping at least another 15,000 cubic yards of rock and soil onto the road. On Monday, it was reopened to one lane of traffic.

The two-lane section of highway, about 6 miles north of Leggett, was undergoing repairs and limited to one lane of traffic before last week’s slide. The road also was closed March 10 following a previous landslide.

The closure has created an hourslong detour for drivers, who have been directed to use Highway 5 as an alternative route.
