WALNUT CREEK - Police say a woman has been shot and killed outside a wildlife sanctuary in a suburban area of Northern California.

Walnut Creek Police say the woman was slain about 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Walnut Creek, an affluent city about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of San Francisco. She was shot outside the Lindsay Wildlife Experience, which takes in and cares for injured and stranded animals.

The facility also serves as a public museum. Museum spokeswoman Elisabeth Nardi says officials don't know whether the victim was a visitor to the facility. It closed for the day after the shooting.

No arrests have been made and police have not released the victim's name or age.
