A week after one of its officers shot an armed man twice in the back, Sonoma State University Police continue to refuse to identify the officer.

“The officer’s name will not be released until we can be assured that the officer’s safety isn’t jeopardized,” Sonoma State University Police Chief Dave Dougherty said by email.

The wounded man, Eduardo Martinez Sanchez, 22, of Santa Rosa, is alleged May 5 to have fired four shots at a crowd after beating a woman in downtown Cotati after bars closed at 2 a.m.

Martinez Sanchez was shot about two-and-a-half hours later after he tried to evade the SSU police officer. Authorities claim he was reaching for a gun in his waistband moments before the officer shot him.

Martinez Sanchez was reported in stable condition at a local hospital Friday.
