Large number of whales spotted near Golden Gate Bridge

Up to 18 whales at a time have been spotted by tourists, while typically the 45-feet-long mammals will only swim in groups of two or three.|

Just off the Sonoma County coastline, more than 20,000 humpback whales will travel through the waters of the Pacific Ocean to reach the warm lagoons off Baja, California. This great migration is often a spectacle in Sonoma County, and this year is no different.

The Bay Area however, particularly surrounding the Golden Gate Bridge, has seen an increase in humpback whale sightings this migration, which takes place May through November. Large groups of up to 18 whales have been spotted by tourists, while typically the 45-feet-long mammals will only swim in groups of two or three.

In Sonoma County, popular spots to view the migration is Bodega Head as they go past Doran Beach.
