A motorist was killed in a five-vehicle crash Wednesday evening on Highway 101 in Santa Rosa, the CHP said.

The fatal crash was reported around 5:30 p.m. near the Mendocino Avenue exit, according to CHP. A Ford F-250 pickup slammed into a Honda Civic, killing the driver in that car, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said.

The crash blocked two northbound lanes, causing major traffic backups on the highway. The road reopened at about 8:30 p.m.

Sloat said at 9 p.m. there would be further updates Thursday.
