Musician robbed of laptop, dragged to death in Oakland

An Oakland musician was killed when he tried to chase down thieves who stole his laptop and was run over by a vehicle.|

SAN FRANCISCO - An Oakland musician was killed when he tried to chase down thieves who stole his laptop and was run over by a vehicle.

KGO-TV reports that police on Thursday identified the victim as 40-year-old musician David Deporis.

Witnesses said Deporis was sitting outside at an Oakland cafe Wednesday working on his laptop when someone grabbed it and jumped in a waiting car.

Police said Deporis ran after the car and apparently grabbed onto the vehicle, which dragged him down the street.

Officers found him with severe injuries and rushed Deporis to a hospital, where he later died.

Police have not released information on suspects.

Friends and fans posted tributes to Deporis on social media, describing him as a kind and gentle person with a gift for writing heartfelt music.
