A double trailer load of red grapes got prematurely crushed Tuesday morning when a big rig went off the road west of Calistoga, the CHP said.

The slippery mess on Petrified Forest Road west of Franz Valley School Road in Napa County prompted officers to slow approaching traffic and call a county road sweeper to clear the asphalt following the incident reported at 9:40 a.m., the CHP said.

The driver, whose name was not available, told officers his brakes may have failed, Officer Tracy Ross said, but investigators have not reached a conclusion.

The truck driver was not injured and no other vehicles were involved, she said.

Ross said the truck went through a fence and came to rest in a wooded area.
