CHRISTI WARREN,

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. reported 51,000 customers were still without power Tuesday morning across Sonoma County, with the largest outage area on the west side of Santa Rosa where about 15,500 homes and businesses are powerless.

“We were basically making areas safe for fire officials by de-energizing lines, starting really early Monday morning and Sunday night,” said Deanna Contreras, spokeswoman for PG&E. “That’s our top priority, is making it safe for the public, our customers and fire officials.”

There was no estimate for when any of those customers might get power back, she said, though Cal Fire was hopeful it could be as soon as this afternoon for the areas the fires didn’t touch.

“As soon as it’s safe to do so, we’ll assess the impact on the lines, assess the damage and restore electric service,” Contreras said.
