An escapee from a Southern California jail was found this week in Petaluma, according to Petaluma police.

Officers on foot patrol in Washington Square shopping center Sunday morning were talking to transients, looking to curtail problems by loiterers for businesses, police said. They found Humberto Gastelum, 43, of Imperial County, checked his identity and learned he was wanted for walking away from an Imperial County Jail work crew, police said.

Gastelum was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County Jail where he awaits extradition back to Southern California.
