An image posted to NASA's Facebook page on Monday shows the areas still burning in the two-week-old Thomas fire raging in Southern California from space.

The natural-color image was collected on Dec. 16 with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Hot spots are outlined in red.

The blaze, which has burned more than 270,000 acres and 1,300 structures in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, is currently the third largest in the state's history. Containment is at 45 percent with hopes of full containment by early January.

Lighter winds and cooler air is expected to help the firefight in the coming days.
