A 21-year-old man died Saturday night after he flipped an all-terrain vehicle on a Chapman Lane property outside Petaluma.

Garrett Hughes, of Petaluma, was driving a 2017 Yamaha Rhino, a side-by-side ATV, on a makeshift track in a grassy field with two passengers onboard around 9 p.m., the CHP said in a statement.

The ATV rolled over due to Hughes’ speed and possible intoxication, CHP said. He suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Petaluma Fire Department.

The passengers, Todd Summerville, 20, and Jack Holmes, 19, both from Petaluma, complained of pain but declined medical transportation, CHP said. None of the three men was wearing helmets or seatbelts at the time of the accident.
