Petaluma police are looking for a homeless man who they say stabbed another homeless man at least three times in a field Thursday evening south of Hopper Street.

The suspect, Steven Charles Molina, 47, became upset when the 49-year-old victim began arguing with Molina’s ex-girlfriend, police said in a statement. The victim and the ex-girlfriend did not appear to be romantically involved.

A physical confrontation between the two men ensued and Molina stabbed the man with an unknown object, police said. The victim, who went to a homeless shelter for help, was taken to the hospital by ambulance and is expected to survive.

Petaluma police searched the field north of the Petaluma River but were not able to locate Molina, police said. He is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon.
