A Kelseyville man on a family ATV ride on Cow Mountain died Monday after a crash, according to the CHP.

Fred Skala, 44, had been riding about 3:45 p.m. west of Mill Creek Road in the recreational area that borders Mendocino and Lake counties. He became separated from family on a trail and when they realized he wasn’t with them they called 911. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office started a search.

Just before 11 p.m. Skala was found with his crashed ATV, apparently having died in the crash, officials said.

The CHP is investigating the incident.
