Here’s what’s closed or altered on Presidents Day

Presidents Day means honoring presidents, and taking a day off.|

Presidents day

Today is Presidents Day, a federal holiday.

It was originally established in 1885 to honor President George Washington on his birthday - Feb. 22 - until 1971 when it became part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. It’s now celebrated the third Monday of February.

The idea was to give (most) workers more three-day weekends, and honor all presidents.

Here’s a list of closures and altered schedules:

Closed

City, county, federal offices

Most banks and savings institutions

U.S. Post Office (Holiday Premium, Priority Mail Express deliveries)

All public schools

Sonoma County libraries

Altered schedule

Sonoma County Transit on Saturday schedule

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit on weekend schedule

Golden Gate Transit on Sunday/holiday schedule

Recology Sonoma Marin regular schedule
