Last Saturday, under the bright lights of Spreckels Performing Arts Center in Rohnert Park, Tyler-Avery Lewis accepted the title of Miss Sonoma County with tears in her eyes.

The 22-year-old Santa Rosa Junior College student beat out six contestants who were evaluated on their talents, appearance, poise, and intelligence. This June, she goes on to compete in the Miss California pageant which has been celebrated since 1924, when Faye Lamphier took the title and went on to become Miss America 1925.

Sonoma County has been participating in the nationwide beauty contest since 1946 although we crowned queens prior to that. The styles may have changed, but the duties are still the same. The winner becomes a spokesperson for the county at events locally and statewide. Miss Sonoma County makes appearances at everything from the County Fair to local store openings.
