A Willits man died in a crash early Tuesday after he apparently lost control of his vehicle while speeding and was thrown from his car after hitting a tree, according to the CHP.

About 1:50 a.m. the man was driving east on Highway 20, just south of Willits near Hollands Avenue, when he crashed. Initial reports said it wasn’t clear how fast he was going but that he was traveling at a high rate of speed when his 2004 Cadillac left the north side of the road and struck the tree. The driver wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, the CHP said.

The man’s name wasn’t released, pending notification of his family.

Whether alcohol or drugs were factors remained under investigation, the CHP said.
