Sebastopol police arrested a driver who led officers on a 70 mph chase through downtown then sped up to 100 mph on Highway 116 before the driver crashed into a fence.

Officers were called to check out a suspicious driver about 11 p.m. Sunday in a residential area near downtown, according to police.

The driver wouldn’t pull over and the Honda Civic sped off on Florence Avenue, followed by an officer with lights and siren going. Through downtown the chase reached about 70 mph and then moved to Highway 116 south of town with the suspect driving faster than 100 mph, according to police.

On Stony Point Road and Roblar Road the driver crashed into a fence. He wasn’t injured and officers arrested Yoges Murugan, 35, of Sebastopol on suspicion of reckless evading and driving the wrong way on a highway, police said.

Murugan was booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
