Sonoma County sheriff’s officials have launched an investigation following the discovery of a body Friday evening along a bank of the Russian River in Geyserville. Preliminary findings indicate the death does not appear to be suspicious, authorities said.

The Sheriff’s Office was notified of the body by a cellphone caller at 6:14 p.m. The caller said the body was found along the river east of a residence in the 21000 block of River Lane.

Violent crimes investigators were called in to assist, but by the time detectives arrived the area had become shrouded in darkness.

The scene was secured overnight to allow work to continue at daybreak.

On Saturday morning, detectives and crime scene investigators determined the death was not suspicious. The Sonoma County coroner came to the same conclusion. Sheriff’s officials did not say what led to their determination or provide a gender or approximate age for the deceased person.

The body has been identified but the name was not being released Saturday until next of kin are notified.
