OAKLAND - Hail is covering highways and streets in the San Francisco Bay Area and snow is falling in the Sierra Nevada as a spring storm moves through Northern California.

Some cars are sliding off roads and school officials in Oakland say they are considering delaying the start of classes Monday after a hail storm coated some areas in white.

Residents posted on social media photographs and videos of children sledding down hills on pieces of cardboard and chunks of hail bigger than a quarter.

Forecasters say showers and thunderstorms across the Bay Area will continue into Monday afternoon.

They say elevations above 3,000 feet (914 meters) can expect 3 to 8 inches (7 centimeters to 20 centimeters) of snow.

In Southern California, winds are the concern, especially in the interior.
