The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office still is trying to identify a man found dead earlier this week in a Santa Rosa storm drain.

Coroner’s investigators don’t have a name on the man, yet, officials said Wednesday.

City workers found his badly decomposed body Monday morning while searching for the source of a bad smell. They opened the manhole cover at the intersection of D and First streets in downtown Santa Rosa and discovered the body below.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday and the man’s cause of death also remains under investigation. Authorities previously said it appeared he hanged himself.

Access to the city’s storm drain system is available from nearby creek tunnels.
