A man broke into the employee shack at the Guerneville refuse transfer station early Friday and stole food from a refrigerator, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man spent about 20 minutes trying to force open the window into the structure where daytime customers pay to use the Pocket Canyon facility, Sgt. Spencer Crum said.

All the man made off with were “menial amounts” of food, Crum said, though he wasn’t able to say exactly what was taken from the Republic Services of Sonoma County facility, where residents drop off recyclables and refuse that get hauled to the county landfill.

A gate to the facility located uphill from Highway 116 is typically locked at night.

Security camera footage captured images of the man climbing through the window about 3:30 a.m. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Deputy Jensen at the Guerneville Substation at 707-565-2121
