Jarryd Hayne, the Australian rugby star who briefly played with the 49ers, was arrested and charged Monday with aggravated sexual assault of a woman nearly two months ago.

Hayne is free on bail in Sydney, Australia after turning himself into police, who had launched an investigation after a woman said she had been sexually assaulted on Sept. 30 by a man she had met online.

He is due in court in Burwood, Australia on Dec. 10.

The 30-year-old Hayne is already facing a trial in federal court after a woman filed a lawsuit alleging he raped her in San Jose in 2015. The trial is scheduled for the fall of 2019.

His latest charge is from what the 26-year-old alleged victim in Australia claims was at first a consensual sexual encounter that she said then turned violent. Currently a free agent in Australia's National Rugby League, Hayne was charged with aggravated sexual assault for “inflicting actual bodily harm.”

The charge carries a maximum 20-year jail sentence if Hayne winds up being convicted.

Hayne was named the NRL's player of the year in 2009 and 2014 before embarking on a bid to make the NFL with the 49ers as a running back/kick returner. He was the feel-good story of the 49ers' 2015 camp and went on to make the team. Hayne played in eight games, rushing for just 52 yards on 17 carries (3.1 avg.), and returned eight punts for 76 yards (9.5 avg.).

Hayne then retired from the NFL before the 2016 season and returned to Australia to play for the Parramatta Eels.
