Joshua Tree woman, 70, killed by 4 pit bulls

JOSHUA TREE - A 70-year-old Joshua Tree woman has been killed after being mauled by four pit bills in her home.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department says Lana Bergman was home alone with the dogs on Wednesday night when they attacked.

Deputies say all four dogs mauled Bergman, who died of her injuries shortly after.

Animal control officers took custody of the dogs without incident. Deputies say the dogs appeared well cared-for and that they don't know what prompted them to attack.

Deputies say the dogs belonged to a friend who lived with Bergman and her husband and that they were considered family pets.

They say Bergman has been helping care for the dogs for the past year.
