A 51-year-old man was killed in a crash on Highway 101 near Willits after a pickup drifted into oncoming traffic and slammed into his passenger van head-on.

The man, whose name is being withheld while next of kin is notified, died Friday evening at the crash site north of Reynolds Highway, the CHP said.

The pickup driver, Ramon Machado, 71, of Leggett, was taken with major injuries to Adventist Health Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits. CHP said it’s still investigating why Machado’s northbound 2001 Dodge Ram crossed into the southbound lanes before striking the 2013 Mercedes Sprinter van.

Drugs and alcohol ?do not appear to be a ?factor in the crash, CHP said.
