SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Bay Area officials are looking to expand late-night bus service to transport people across the bay.

The San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/1wVCMtZ) reports Bay Area Rapid Transit plans to launch a one-year test program, possibly in December, to add overnight bus service from San Francisco to central Contra Costa County on weekends.

Regional transportation official are looking for ways to address the shortage of late-night public transportation out of San Francisco. Currently, the last BART train to the East Bay departs shortly after midnight.

A task force has been meeting since June and plans to release its recommendations for expanding late-night transportation later this year.

BART officials say it is difficult to expand overnight train service because tracks need to be shut down for maintenance for roughly four hours.
