Birds cleaned of mystery goo to return to Bay Area shorelines (w/video)

SAN FRANCISCO — A bird rescue groups says the first group of about 20 seabirds that have recovered after getting covered in a mysterious substance will be released back into San Francisco Bay Area's shorelines.

International Bird Rescue executive director Barbara Callahan says the seabirds will be released at Fort Baker in Sausalito on Wednesday.

She says state investigators haven't determined what was in the gray gunk that looked and felt like rubber cement or where the substance came from.

Callahan says no more affected birds have been spotted since Thursday.

At least 150 birds died after getting covered in the odorless substance which sapped the animal's ability to insulate themselves against the cold.

Another 315 live birds were taken to the International Bird Rescue to be cleaned.
