OAKLAND — A high school freshman was fatally shot over the weekend and the city's police chief is vowing to catch the killer.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1N8vaO7 ) Monday that 14-year-old Davon Ellis was walking with friends when he was shot in the city's Fruitvale district shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday.

Police Chief Sean Whent says all violent crime is tragic, and "even more so" when the victim is a child.

No one has been arrested in the killing.

Police have not released a motive in the shooting and the killing remains under investigation. It was not clear Monday if the boy was the intended target.

Counselors will be on hand Monday at his high school to talk to his classmates.

Candles and flowers were left at the spot where he was shot.
