Muir Woods entrance fee jumping to $10

SAN FRANCISCO — The fee for an adult to enter Marin County's popular Muir Woods will increase from $7 to $10 in 2016.

Entry for children under 16 years of age will continue to be free, said the National Park Service, which announced the price increase on Thursday.

It's free for visitors to mill around the parking lot and entrance plaza, but they must pay for interactive-friendly, close-up views of the coast redwood forest named after conservationist John Muir. The park attracts about 1 million people a year. President Theodore Roosevelt declared the area a national monument in 1908.

A $20 annual fee for Muir Woods will increase to $40, also starting Jan. 1.
