Oakland cop fatally shoots assault suspect who beat her with metal object

OAKLAND — Oakland police say an officer is hospitalized with head injuries after fatally shooting an assailant who beat her with a metal object.

Officer Johnna Watson says the confrontation occurred Thursday morning when the patrol officer stopped a man walking near Interstate 580 in the Adams Point neighborhood after a report of a disturbance and assault.

Watson says the man pulled out a metal object and began beating the officer on the face and head. The officer managed to reach her gun and open fire on the attacker. The man died at the scene.

The officer is being treated for head trauma at a hospital.

The names of the officer and the suspect were not released.
