SAN FRANCISCO — Fremont police have arrested a man they believe killed his mother.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1iYTMy3 ) that the 31-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning in Kensington after police received a call about a suspicious person with a duffel bag on the back porch of a home.

Police haven't said what was inside the bag or why the Fremont man was 40 miles from home.

Capt. Fred Bobbitt says police discovered a woman in her 60s dead in a Fremont apartment while conducting a Sept. 29 welfare check. Someone had called police when they couldn't get in touch with the woman.

Police have not released details about the death other than calling it a homicide involving "severe" violence.

Bobbitt says police didn't receive any calls from neighbors about the death.
